Introduction to TrainingOne of the kindest things that an owner of a German Shepherd can do is to train and socialize them. It is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Due to the size, strength, and relative fearlessness of the Shepherd, they can appear to be quite ominous to those that don’t know or understand these powerful dogs. Having said this, the word training can mean different things to different people. Training simply put, is the conditioning and disciplining of a dog in order to create specific behaviors. Regardless of the goals you have for training your German Shepherd there are four commands that every dog should understand:Of all the commands and tricks you can teach your German Shepherd these four are the most important. No matter what may be going on around you, it is imperative that you be in control of your dog at all times. Not only will it save you from a few embarrassing moments, but it may also save your Shepherds life. Although training will take a certain amount of time and discipline, it will be time well invested. No one wants to chase down an ill-tempered, unruly and obnoxious German Shepherd, nor, will you enjoy dealing with the damage that your dog is likely to cause. During your training sessions you must be focused on your dog and keep your dog focused on you. Dogs understand both body language and project it. Be very observant of their reactions, both physically and emotionally; be consistent in your training methods and rewards. Be Patient! Patient! Patient! If you or your dog begins to feel frustrated return to something your dog knows’ well and end on a good note. Remember to keep training sessions short and calm and you will both benefit from them. Given the opportunity, German Shepherds will thrive on the training that is set before them and will flourish in an environment that is challenging both to their minds and bodies. The benefits to both the dog and its owner will be full of rich rewards that will create a happy healthy Shepherd, not to mention a happy family.
