Characteristics of the German Shepherd Dog

Of all the purebred dogs in the world the German Shepherd is by far one of the most popular. The characteristic of the Shepherds are versatility, curiousity, energetic, intelligence, stablity, easily trained, and loyalty. They are fluid in motion with floating gaits that are unique only to the GSD. Combining all the above mentioned characteristics with a nobleness and physical beauty one can easily understand the magnetic appeal of the breed. Although they are extremely adaptable these dogs are not perfect. One needs to realize that they are not going to be the best choice for everyone’s family pet. German Shepherds have a strong and genuine need to be included in all aspects of their family’s daily lives and activities. They do not thrive on living in a kennel environment, nor chained up in the backyard. GSD’s are definitely people oriented and can be extremely destructive if left to their own devises for too long a time period.
This behavioral trait is in part due to the breeds’ intellect and curiosity. GSD’s are always looking for something to do. They enjoy working and truly feel useful when they are given a task or job to carry out. If one is considering bringing a German Shepherd Dog into their family they need to be aware of the amount of time, and expense they are going to incur. They crave companionship with their human partners and need daily quality exercise and training. They also can be quite playful, will frequently act the clown and are hams in front of the camera. All in all they need and require a firm, active, and loving home.
As in any breed, German Shepherds have many typical characteristics, but, also there are many varied types of individual personalities. Each GSD has a unique temperament unto them. They each have different levels of learning and physical abilities, and just like their human companions, they too can be dominant or submissive. Some can be laid back or easy going while others are more temperamental. When choosing your GSD it is imperative that you try to match your personality and lifestyle with that of the dogs. Otherwise you and your family could be in for disappointment and heartache rather than a happy and healthy relationship between you and your dog that will stand up through the tests of time.
